Greater reassurance after abnormal screening results
Since 2020, our practice has offered a specialized dysplasia clinic with diagnostic colposcopy. In August 2022, this clinic was recognized by the German Cancer Society as a certified gynecological dysplasia clinic. This gives you the reassurance that your examination is carried out according to verified quality standards, and that even complex findings are assessed in a structured and careful manner.
In our dysplasia clinic, we evaluate abnormal cervical screening smears and HPV results, explain all findings in a clear and understandable way, and plan the next steps together with you. Our aim is to provide clarity early on, prevent unnecessary worry, and initiate any necessary treatment in good time.

Frequently asked questions
What are dysplasias?
When do I need to attend the dysplasia clinic?
- your Pap smear (cell sample from the cervix) is abnormal,
- the microscopic examination of the cervix produces an unclear result,
- or unclear changes of the external genital area are found,
Screening findings that require further evaluation include:
- III D1 (mild cell changes),
- III D2 (moderate cell changes), or
- IV (severe cell changes)
What happens during an appointment in the dysplasia clinic?
The examination is similar to a routine gynecological screening. While you are on the exam chair, the cervix is examined using a microscope. Special staining solutions are applied to make abnormal cells visible. It is often necessary to take a targeted tissue sample (biopsy), which is usually painless or performed under local anesthesia.
Any abnormal changes in the vagina and in the vaginal vestibule (vulva) are also examined under magnification, and samples may be taken there as well, with pain relief/anesthesia if needed.
What treatment options are available?
Once all results are available, I will discuss with you in detail whether treatment is necessary and, if so, create a treatment plan. Severe precancerous changes should be removed surgically. Most of these procedures can be performed on an outpatient basis under short general anesthesia. In a few cases, the procedure is done as an inpatient. Surgery is performed as tissue-sparing as possible. It is important that you arrive fasting for the operation. During the procedure, small electrosurgical loops are used under colposcopic guidance. After a few hours, you can usually go home.
Treatment options at a glance
- Minimally invasive hysteroscopy (uterine endoscopy)
- Dilation and curettage (fractionated curettage)
- Loop electrosurgical excision procedure (LEEP)
- Conization procedures
- Laser excision and laser vaporization
